in volume 2 of the series, the focus is completely on the anatomical modeling of the human head, which consists of a collection of the most important information for sculptors, and gives a practical and highly detailed introduction to the anatomy and processes for the modeling of facial features.

through the use of sketches, photographs, videos and diagrams, the text in volume 2 covers the whole head in both the front, back and side views. the anatomy of the head is broken down into their components, and the skill of sculpting is illustrated with close-up studies of the author’s work. the sections range from modeling techniques to modeling the head as it would be in the real world, to teaching about the application of shading techniques.

the book is written by alexandra faraut who studied portrait sculpting in the advanced classes taught by philippe faraut. she describes how to sculpt different parts of the body and explain the use of tools and materials. the book includes many useful tips on inclusions, glazing and texturing techniques. alexandra faraut even provides a few of philippe’s original sculpted models as examples to demonstrate the techniques. she notes that when you practise the techniques described, you will start to observe many interesting things about the face. i have read the book before when the title was mastering portraiture and i was not disappointed. the book is always useful to me because even though i had learnt the skill of portraiture sculpting when i started modelling, i never really understood what makes a portrait. alexandra faraut is very objective on this and helps you understand why a portrait draws us in. this is because she describes the face with great detail by analysing its structure, determining its proportions and explaining the details such as features, faces expressions and gestures.

the book is divided into four parts. part one is called the brief history of clay and how to make clay sculptures. alexandra faraut starts the chapter on this by discussing the history of modelling in clay and explains the change from the renaissance period to the present day. she talks about how the methods of sculpting in soft materials have been developed over time. she also describes the advantages of sculpture versus painting and explains about the different types of modelling tools. alexandra faraut explains how to use them, how to deal with them and how to clean them. the next chapter, another good chapter, starts with a quote from michelangelo, “it is not sufficient to think that one could sculpt, one has to do it. my greatest satisfaction is to know that i have sculpted.” alexandra faraut explains that skill does matter. there are a lot of sculptors out there but only a few really excel in their work. this book will help you learn how to sculpt and acquire the skill. i think this chapter is the best chapter of the book. then alexandra faraut comes to the next section which is sculpting the face and head. here she talks about a few basic elements of the face such as the eyes, the cheeks, the nose, the lips, the jaw and the chin. she also describes some terms about the face such as the origin, the direction and the width of the smile. alexandra faraut also describes how to sculpt the head in three dimensions with the help of references and photographs. i found this part quite interesting because it shows you how to sculpt the whole head, not just how to sculpt the basic features. she also explains how to sculpt the head using the different methods such as modeling in clay, modeling with a soapstone carving tool, modelling with a bowl-handled tool and modeling with a 2d drawing. alexandra faraut even has a few original examples of portraits done in her own style. she also teaches you how to sculpt the face with different techniques such as the lipgild technique, the hair sculpture technique, the smoke technique and the carving technique. she also describes the different types of glaze colours such as tempera, enamels, platinum, acrylic, oil and wax. she then talks about the use of various tools such as the soft tool, the bone tool, the embossing tool, the modeling tool and the carving tool. alexandra faraut also explains what elements to focus on such as the background, the basic details, the overall effect and the effects of light. then she talks about texture and mentions the different ways to apply them.
