GIMP
GIMP, or GNU Image Manipulation Program is probably the most popular Photoshop alternative. It provides all the essential functionality of a professional photo editing suite with an intuitive user interface.
GIMP is open source and free, so you can modify it to suit your needs. It’s regularly updated by its community and can be distributed under the GNU GPL v3. It’s still under active development, and it does require some technical knowledge of how to make its features work.

Color management
GIMP allows you to perform color management tasks. If you shoot in RAW and work with images at large sizes, color management is important to make sure your image colors look the same across different displays, browsers, or printing processes.

GIMP has an array of tools to help you create or edit vector graphics. They can be used to convert a photograph into a logo or template, create and edit simple shapes such as curves, or create objects that can be easily modified or scaled down. They include a brush, paint tool, pen tool, eraser, marquee tool, image resizer and eraser, zoom tool, shape tool, transform tool, and many more.
Patterns
It’s useful to be able to create and edit patterns using GIMP. You can repeat patterns or create a new pattern using the pattern selector tool. The pattern manager displays a list of patterns that you can apply to a new canvas.

I did not exactly know what it was, but upon finding the twin 2 1/2 ton overhead cranes in L.A.’s Westlake Village, a small apartment complex on Westlake Village Drive, I was smitten. They were two endearing old cranes, and they became my totem image. I looked at them often to remind myself that I’m going to be all right. My zeal to save them has created an unexpected dilemma; the one thing they cannot be moved is their peeling paint.
Two new developments have me concerned about the future of the Westlake Village cranes. (The lift arms, however, could be dismantled and relocated to Kansas City, where they would make a handsome series of elegant abstract sculptures, and their parts reused in the craftsmanship of contemporary boats.) The first development is that a company has bought the property, including the cranes. The property originally came to the city through the eminent domain proceedings that have since moved the cranes to their present locale on Westlake Boulevard.
The second development is that the city recently decided to demolish the cranes in order to make way for more parking. The company that bought the property will hopefully make the cranes a part of a high-end development, which also will include a hotel, shopping center and something else besides parking lots. What will be the fate of the Westlake Village cranes then? Will the city give them to a museum? Will a local firm create the cranes into multiples for display in neighborhoods where shopping centers are planned? Will someone cast them in bronze, perhaps to adorn a building complex in Japan?
Over the last few months, I’ve been working on a concept for a sculpture to be created as a series of 12, multi-ton cranes, each designed to be its own body, mobile and articulate as it appears in the wind, swaying in the sunlight, gliding on the water. Could I design the cranes now so that they last forever as part of a society with a future for living and working in their own world? I don’t know. But that would be a project of the spirit of my totem cranes, which is what makes them precious.

How is non-blocking I/O implemented on non-POSIX OS’s?
I haven’t heard of anyone questioning the concept of non-blocking I/O. I am certainly not, but I am interested in reading about how this might be implemented. I am particularly interested in how it may be implemented on non-POSIX operating systems (such as Windows), or if it might be an impossibility.
In the case of non-blocking I/O, say a file is opened for writing and a thread is used to write to it.
Thread 1 writes to the file and keeps going.
Thread 2 reads from the file and keeps going.
At some point, Thread 1, which is writing to the file, blocks until it is able to fully write the current buffer.
If Thread 2 picks up reading, then it must immediately lock the file until Thread 1 is ready to write. Once Thread 1 is done, it will unlock the file and Thread 2 can then read. This is a blocking system call which could easily be made non-blocking (maybe using the poll method, which is more or less a wrapper around select?), but that would only allow one thread to operate at a time.
I’m really interested to hear people’s experiences (or lack thereof) of dealing with non-blocking I/O on different operating systems.

Are you thinking of a specific operating system here, or just an OS? Most operating systems don’t actually use threads to do non-blocking I/O. What they do is (a) detect that there is a request for non-blocking I/O, and then (b) implement a micro-kernel that can respond to the request.
For example, most Unix-like operating systems use libevent to implement some kind of non-blocking I/O framework, in part because not all platforms support the epoll (from which libevent derives) interface. And Windows has a non-blocking I/O interface (used for things like WebSocket and OLE DB) called Overlapped I/O, but it’s only available for a limited set of platforms (from the looks of it, Silverlight/Windows Phone support).
As for the actual kernel system call, well
