Power Users Guide: Using the Layers Panel and Quick Mask
Photoshop’s working memory is stored as layers. These layers enable you to edit portions of images without damaging the rest. Each layer has its own set of settings and controls for layers, including transparency.
The Layers Panel (Figure 4-2) lists the layers in a photo, their names, and how far the layer is from the top of the stack. To add layers, start at the top of the stack and select Layer > New. This adds a new layer below the layers you have already created. It also creates an additional set of menu commands to go from the new layer to any of the layers already created in the image.
The Layers Panel can be your best friend in photo editing. Many of the tools require multiple layers to modify the image. Layer, groups of layers, and the adjustments under each adjustment layer are all listed. These instructions describe how to easily use the Layers Panel, as well as how to create and edit layers.

Basic Photo Editing with the Layers Panel
Editing your image is a two-step process. First, you must add the layer. Once you have a layer, you need to make edits to the layer. Photoshop has many layers to choose from when adding new ones to the project.
The images in the following sections will help you to understand the basic steps to add new layers and edit them.
Creating layers
As the first step, open the Image menu to open the Layers Panel. Next, create new layers by clicking Layer > New. You can add many types of layers, including adjustment layers.
You can also create layers by using the Layers panel’s drop-down menu in the top-right corner of the panel. This menu allows you to add layers, such as adjustment layers, by using one of the four types of layer that are available. If the drop-down menu is missing or grayed out, you have already opened the Layers Panel and are ready to create a new layer.
You can easily add layer folders to the layers panel by using the main menu bar. In Figure 4-3, you see three folders of layers under the Layers panel (under Window). You can edit these folders by clicking

What are the features of Photoshop Elements?
The most important feature in Photoshop Elements is its streamlined interface.
It is the only image editing software designed to be used on a touch device. This is a huge boon when editing large images or doing complicated editing tasks.
P.S. If you would like to sharpen images, add backgrounds, crop images, and more in Mac, then I recommend using Photoshop Elements. It’s a similar app, and I think it makes much more sense to use for most people. The updates of Elements are typically a few months apart, so that means the app will be getting new features while you’re using it.
A note for new users: I’m assuming you are a beginner photoshop user. That means you have never used these programs or cameras:

A small note: Photoshop Elements doesn’t have a front end file viewer.
You have to open and close files with a file browser.
This is not a big deal if you are editing one image at a time, but if you have a large folder full of images, this is a huge downside.
You can add layers from the welcome screen to hold image layers together, or you can use your own workspace.
A Tip: You can hide the workspace workspace and create a new one.
A Side Note: If you have lots of images open, keep in mind that Photoshop Elements uses memory. So, if you work with a lot of images and go to another image file then you will start a session. A session is like what we know as a tab in the browser. If you have a lot of images open and close a lot, you can run into the “Out of memory” error message. A lot of people open images that are placed in their workspace. Once they close that image, it leaves a session open. Then they start a new session and open a lot more images. At some point, that memory can run out. Photoshop Elements won’t close the sessions until you hit the application menu and tell it to. You can just start again on a new workspace by selecting a new folder.
