I do not want to get too classical here and say that I have made a living out of being one of the greatest photographers of the 21st Century, but since 2006 the images in Picasaweb and Picasa have been my bread and butter. What was once a good-sized and convenient job has become a lot harder in the past 10 years. Clients and their expectations are growing, projects are getting bigger, and accessibility to technology is expanding exponentially. More specifically, the rules of business are changing, because all new competition comes through the smartphone, and even the most challenging of them, offering arguably the best user experiences on this planet, do not forsake that connection. The laws of business are, however, still the same and they have been the same for decades: maximize profitability and be increasingly efficient. Creativity used to be something that separated us from the rest of the world. Today, although it is still extremely important, it is a luxury, and competitors do not need to have the same back-bone and nerve. We, photographers, have become more and more specialized in our areas of expertise, no longer working for clients on short term projects, but for them for the long term. Our daily workflow consists of more and more software, more and more storage, imagery, and metadata. Photo-weavers are becoming more and more interesting, because they allow us to use the tools that we love for creative coding. As a result, the aforementioned workflow, the tools, and the process to produce images all become extremely complex. With that said, I am beginning to see that every new step requires time, persistence, and dedication. In order to get the very best out of the experience, every professional photographer needs to invest to a certain extent in the knowledge they need to maximize their images and enjoy every time they make a hit.

The last thing to inquire about with your computer upgrade is processor speed. For almost everyone, having a computer that’s too slow will make using the computer a frustrating experience. In the case of a typical home computer, your computer should be capable of processing all of the software that you are using without hesitation. Again, if you are in school and have students come in and out of your classroom constantly, processor speed can really start to drain your computer.

A commonly used plugin is Adobe Bridge which is a program that connects to all the files on your hard drive. This program is used to preview your images, thumbnails, fonts, opening, saving, naming your images, and much more. This can act as your database for all the projects and pics that you have saved to your computer. It can even be used to digitize your photos or images. One of my favorite features of Bridge is the various effects available along with custom fonts. JPG is the native resolution for Photoshop and is the only recommended resolution for PS downloads. Any higher resolution will result in a slow download time. When reading about graphic files, it is important to know the format of the file and the best download resolution. Some sites such as Adobe’s website will state the best resolution for the file. However, the resolution you download is how large the image will appear in the PS editing software. Another thing to consider while downloading graphics is the support for resolution. Some graphics files open in Photoshop with a resolution of 14.4k or greater, however the resolution you choose is dependent on how large the file is. If you have to edit the file multiple times, you will want to choose a higher resolution. In another instance, if you just want to view the final product, a lower resolution can be fine. It is always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to downloading files. A good practice is to always reduce the size of the PNG file before downloading.

The new Fill and Delete tools are a one-click workflow for making alterations and edits to content in an image, such as removing or replacing a photo or revising color balance and contrast. The new Fill and Delete tools can be accessed by pressing the Shift + F7 keyboard shortcut or by dragging the Fill and Delete tools from the toolbar.

Adobe Photoshop is a software with a suite of vector tools, which use an intelliJQR format, allowing some element editing. Vector editing is where you can move and edit elements, enlarge or shrink, rotate, and scale. If you want to edit items in a PDF, you don’t need to close the PDF or start Photoshop. You can use the same workflow as a normal Adobe Photoshop document while online. Photoshop handles the PDF as a layer protected by a mask. If you edit the PDF layer, there’s no quality loss.

Enhanced editing tools like the Mask and Type tools were introduced in Elements 12, adding more options than ever before. The new Mask Browser allows you to quickly apply masks to a selection, while the new Select and Mask Boundaries tool allow users to easily select, edit and manipulate the boundary of a selection, and the new Switch tools allow you to toggle between dozens of editing options. In addition, the new Style Match feature helps users with type-to-style consistency and facilitates the creation of copy–paste-compatible drawings.

Elements 13 was the last release to contain the Classic View option. This mode retains the same visual editing size as Photoshop (though users can change this size manually.) Elements 12 was the last release to support the Retina display and brings with it a variety of performance and responsiveness improvements. This release includes responsive icons for managing and exporting files, and the new Watermark tool allows you to add backgrounds to photos. It also includes two new camera sizes: 3.2x, a Portrait-size option suited for high-quality snap shots, and 6.1x, a 16mm option for those who want full flexibility in selectively cropping the shot.
