Another change that I found appealing was the lack of the Dust bin. Not only does it create a lot of room on the screen, but it organizes your images in a way that’s conducive to finding the right files on the first try.
The fastest way to get the most out of Photoshop is to develop a collection of keyboard shortcuts. The default is to use the Command key as the main navigation mode, the Control key as the zoom-in/out or action button (which I consider to be one and the same because they produce the same result).
After you’ve selected which command you want to make available to multiple keyboard shortcuts (I use the cmd-X key combo for most operations), you need to install a tool to make things happen – the Photoshop shortcut planner is the perfect solution. For anyone who wants to work with WAIS, the Photoshop shortcut planner is available for free. It allows you to edit any of the built-in shortcuts and save them as your own custom shortcuts.
Once you’ve saved your new keyboard shortcuts, take the time to work on your workflow. You want your shortcuts to work as well as possible, but you don’t want to forget them as you work with Photoshop. After a while, you’ll have them memorized. Also, as you start using all of the various tools available in Photoshop, you want to fit the keyboard shortcuts to the concept of the tool. Otherwise, you’re more likely to use the shortcut for the home row of your keyboard.
You’ll find that Photoshop does a great job of recycling the same elements over and over again. Because of this, you’ll be able to figure out how to manipulate the object you’re editing more intuitive. For example, there’s a part of the image that’s predominantly sky with a few clouds. When I need to get rid of the clouds, either I use the Brush tool, the Content Aware Fill tool, or – to be more precise – the Content Aware Muscle. The last two tools are not something new, but it’s nice to see them present as features of Photoshop. Use Muscle for the attempts to modify the clouds without touching the rest of the image.
The new Refine Edge tool can be used for a variety of purposes. It’s great for removing unwanted blemishes and helps the edges of the image stand out. It also includes most of the other edge corrections that we’ve become accustomed to in other art software.
* Overlay: Blends two layers—or one or more layers—on top of each other to create an inspiring effect. The Pattern Overlay technique is a great way to add a pattern to any image. Watch the example below and keep in mind that you can duplicate the effect as many times as you need to create multiple objects of the same effect.
The Blend option was introduced in CS6, and it’s just one of the many ways you can easily tweak the look and feel of any image. Blend makes it easy to adjust the colors at any point in an image. Plus, you can experiment with different ways of blending with the different blending modes.
Now it’s time to polish your image.
