WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Every day that April and Brittany Wilson are separated, the pain of losing their 11-year-old daughter just keeps getting worse.
Brittany Wilson suffers from chronic migraines so severe she can’t work or leave her home. She needs to be home and near her daughter to better be able to care for her, so for that reason, the parents usually travel to Indianapolis every other weekend.
“I need to be in the best place possible for the best care,” Wilson said. “I can’t be at the hospital. I need to be at home. It’s just much easier for me to be at home.”
Wilson’s pain is so unbearable that it’s stopped her from getting the emotional support she needs as a mom.
“I can’t open my heart up as much as I would like to,” Wilson said. “It’s difficult to express my emotions. I would ask my boyfriend to do that for me, but it’s almost like a game to him to get me to show emotion, because I don’t.”

A deep understanding of the chemical reactivity of selenium and its possible involvement in the mechanism of toxicity of selenium compounds in biological systems is missing. Here, the reactivity of both oxidized forms of selenium (Se(IV) and Se(VI)) in water-organic solvent mixtures was investigated to elucidate their role in toxic effects. The Se(VI) ion and the selenium compound (methylseleninic acid, MeSeA), widely used in medical applications, have been employed as Se(VI) and Se(IV) model compounds, respectively. Chemical oxidation of the Se(IV) ion in water-organic solvent mixtures was investigated in terms of the equilibrium (pH) dependence of the concentrations of dissolved species. The results indicate that the H2O/D2O distribution in the reaction medium is key in determining the reactivity of Se(IV). Moreover, the extent of reaction depends on the nature of the organic solvent used in the medium. The reaction occurs mainly in the water phase, and Se(IV) oxidation follows either the radical or the peroxo mechanism, depending on the solvent nature. MeSeA behaves differently from Se(IV), as it reacts only in the organic phase and with a different mechanism, involving homolytic H-abstraction. The chemical reaction of Se(VI) in water-organic solvent mixtures results in the stoichiometry of Se(VI) and Se(IV) oxidation products being shifted from 1:2 to 1:3 and 1:4. The main reaction observed involves the replacement of one H2O molecule with one molecule of Se(IV), two different mechanisms being adopted in DMSO and H2O-HOAc or H2O-DMSO. The similarity between the present results and those previously obtained for the reaction of Se(VI) with dissolved organic matter indicates that organic components of the medium, either serving as efficient reaction media or being present in traces, might significantly influence the reactivity of Se(VI) in the environment.The Beginning Of The End
