Although Photoshop can be intimidating at first, some basic understanding of what you can do is worth the effort. I introduce Photoshop to you in the section “Getting acquainted with Photoshop” later in this chapter.
A number of applications with similar features (but not necessarily looking as pretty) are available for free. The sites listed in the sidebar “Image-manipulation marketplaces” offer specialized utilities to use with your image editing. Some of the programs I recommend in this chapter (like Paint Shop Pro) are Adobe-related. I also recommend that you make a list of the image-editing programs you’re willing to use for free.
Adobe has come out with a series of inexpensive portable tablets that are very capable in the image manipulation and editing department. You can use these with Photoshop Elements, Photoshop, and Photoshop CS. They’re great for when you want to edit images and are on the go. You can see the cameras and digicams in action at
Your first step to mastering the image editing process is to get comfortable with the tool itself. You can check out Photoshop’s basics in the following section.
I haven’t forgotten the Windows users out there. Photoshop and Elements are included with all major versions of Windows. You can upgrade from a previous version of Windows, or purchase a new copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8 for your new computer.
As an alternative to using your computer, you can also download a copy of Photoshop Elements or Photoshop through the Apple Store (`www.apple.com/itunes/store/`). This store offers both popular and less-popular applications for all Mac OS X and Windows users, including Photoshop Elements and Photoshop.
Getting acquainted with Photoshop
The world of image editing has vastly expanded in the last five or six years, and Photoshop is one of the most powerful tools available in this field. Adobe Photoshop is a raster program, a term I describe in detail in Chapter 2. Raster programs manipulate individual dots in images (pixels, in other words). In Photoshop, a pixel is a dot of color (gray or color) that can be put in an image to make a picture.
A raster program will alter only the pixels that it can see. This is why you can see the result of editing only those areas of an image that you’ve selected. You don’t see areas of the image that were not

Run Photoshop Elements on Chrome OS
Having trouble running Photoshop Elements? Getting error messages? Here’s a simple, safe way to install, update, and run Photoshop Elements on your Chromebook.
Some Chromebooks also support Photoshop Express, an online photo editor from the same company as Photoshop Elements. If you’re looking for that, refer to the Photoshop Express article.
How to Install Photoshop Elements
The first step is to install the Photoshop Elements installer to your Chromebook. You can download the installer from the Elements website.
After you have installed the installation, open up the Chrome Web Store. From there, head to the Photoshop Elements section, and download the installer.
Once you’ve downloaded the installer, open up the Chrome OS App Launcher, search for “Photoshop Elements” and open the program.
How to Prepare an Image for Editing
The moment you open Photoshop Elements and click on the New icon, you’ll be prompted to import an image.
Here’s how to get your image ready for editing:
Open the image you want to edit in Photoshop Elements. Open Photoshop. Duplicate the layer. You can either use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + J or click on the top left corner (“new photo”) icon on your Layers panel. Open the layer in Photoshop Elements, make any edits to the image, and save it. Close Photoshop Elements. Go back to the image in Photoshop Elements, and delete the layer that is no longer used.

Tips, Tricks and How-To’s
The top menu bar of Photoshop Elements contains many tools that you’ll use regularly while editing your photos and design work. You can customize the layout of this menu bar to your liking.
Here are a few tips that will speed up your workflow when you’re editing:
Use the History menu at the top left corner to jump from one edit session to the next. Use the Batch menu to quickly and efficiently edit multiple images at once. You can batch resize and crop images (i.e. resize and crop a bunch of images at once) or batch edit

We studied the influence of perinatal Mg deficiency on the density of acetylcholine receptor binding sites in the spinal cord of young adult (P30) and prenatal (E30) rat offspring. Compared to animals fed a Mg-sufficient control diet, Mg-deficient animals showed a 23% decrease in the density of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor binding sites in the E30 spinal cord. This difference was not seen in the young adult. On the contrary, the density of muscarinic acetylcholine receptor binding sites was not affected by Mg deficiency in either age group. In the young adult spinal cord, we found a 40% decrease in the densities of both nicotinic and muscarinic receptor binding sites in Mg-deficient animals.About the Artist

Pens are similar to brushes, except that Pens are used for drawing, instead of painting or retouching. There are also Specialized Pen’s, such as Faux Pixels, which create a mosaic effect, and Loose Parts which can be used to detach parts of an image to create a unique look.
Brushes also come in different sizes and shapes. Size refers to the width of the line that will be created when using a brush. A larger size will create a thicker line and one with a smaller size will create a thinner line. Shape refers to how the brush will be shaped or pointed. A round brush will create circles, while a square brush will create squares. One of the most popular brushes in Photoshop is the oil paint brush.
Fonts are images made up of individual characters. They allow text to be put into images. One of the more common Photoshop fonts is MS Sans Serif. It is a standard font found on most computers.
Effects are pre-selected changes that can be applied to an image. They can give images a cool or grunge look. There are many effects that can be applied to your photo.
Filters are pre-selected effects that can be applied to an image. They change the color, pattern, contrast, brightness, and even tilt the image.
Extrude and Bevel are two different tools used to distort an object. Extrude works by changing the shape of an object, while bevel lets you create an edge by tearing and zig-zagging an object.
Hue is a tool that lets you change the color of a photo. It is very helpful when changing the color of a certain object.
Layers are a way to organize your image in a way where you can easily edit and move different elements in an image. They are the most common way to edit images.
Photoshop Elements allows a lot of customization of your images and is very good for beginners. Elements adds many extra features such as text, shapes, brushes, and effects. It can be downloaded for free and is a good alternative to Photoshop.
With software such as Photoshop, users can create their own designs. However, the internet is the best place to find pre-made layouts to download and edit.
