When I decided to review Adobe Photoshop Elements, I used a Mac and started working with Camera RAW images from my iPhone 5 and iPhone 6S. In fact, most of the pictures from this review were taken with my iPhone.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 was the first Photo Editor I used, back in 2013 and it was was much simpler than what has been released since. However, if my memory serves me correct, Photoshop Elements 11 was a good photo editing tool. It had a much better feature set than what is featured in Elements 11 or the current version of Elements (at least the user interface and workflow of the Photo Editor), which is why I chose to review it.

In order to work with the most current version of Photoshop Elements, I had to switch to a Windows system. The Team Type and File Type features work perfectly, allowing me to open emails from the Photoshop team, view scheduled content updates, sort cache and even download updates directly to my Mac from the web site. That said, I do miss the ability to download updates for Photoshop Elements from the Mac App Store. However, the most difficult part of the switch was that neither the Mac App Store nor Automator currently supports running processes straight from within the App Store.

This is a major source of frustration for me. Since years, I have used the nifty utility called Automator to create simple workflow. You can drag and drop files from your Mac into the Automator tool, and it will build the workflow for you. Perhaps Automator is too advanced for Macintosh refugees who don’t know the basics of scripting or automating software!

The new features in the web version of Photoshop make it ideal for using in a browser with JavaScript. You can still run Photoshop standalone, of course, but the web app has too many advantages to ignore. First and foremost, you do not need the Adobe Creative Cloud in order to use the new version. Second, the Photoshop web app has the vast advantage of being able to use the powerful features of GPU-accelerated hardware. Most Photoshop plugins do not have a web app, so there are opportunities to build new features for the web. Third, unlike the standalone Photoshop app, you can use the web app on any computer. Fourth, you have the benefit of the same features that you are used to from Photoshop. Graphic apps are not usually best served with locking the work in a single computer, but Adobe — and browser makers on your side — are now working together to achieve that goal. Fifth, you can start with a Photoshop web app and, if it becomes well-used, later download a standalone version to continue editing outside of the browser.

Understanding the Control Panel makes it easy to get to grips with the basic tools of Photoshop. The Exposure Control lets you adjust the overall brightness, gamma, and contrast of an image. This is critical for creating realistic looking images, particularly if the original image was captured under different lighting conditions.

This is the Select tool. The Image Size Control lets you choose special settings for Retouching, such as how large or small you want your output. The Eraser tool gives you a way to erase a selection, or unwanted area in your picture. The Lasso tool lets you draw around an area, or around the edge of a shape, and then erase the unwanted parts seamlessly. The Clone Stamp tool lets you simply copy pixels or areas over the image to create an exact copy. The Brush tool lets you apply Photoshop’s different brushes to the image with the intensity of the size control, and the Dole Highway brush lets you easily defile details in text. The Gradient tool lets you paint across the image to create blended effects. The Gradient Mask tool lets you remove pixels based on the value of a mask, or you can use it to create and then overlay complex masks.

Adobe CC: Photoshop CC 20.0.2 is available with several feature enhancements. There are a number of performance and image quality changes, including improved resizing of regions and smoother erasure tools. There are also new tools to fix dark objects in high-contrast areas.
