Popcorn and Patatine (1985) – Nino D’Angelo is a young school boy with a scooter and a huge passion for the music of the 1960’s. He falls in love with Anna, a girl who thinks that he is dead, but when he returns to.

Agree–“Popcorn and Patatine” is a silly hoot (even if inspired by “Godspell”). The preposterous musicality (“Pray to Satan, and he will hear you!”), the annoying yodeling, the disjointed plot, the confused message (that “love conquers all”) — all conspire to make this a rather silly film. I remember in college when it came out — it was a film with Nino D’Angelo, who was billed as “the Elvis of Italy”, but who sounded more like Dizzy Gillespie or something.

I’ve rarely seen anything with Nino D’Angelo so I was pleased when I came across the film. D’Angelo was a ‘volante’ with the Ponderosa Pizzeria chain in the 80s before he moved to Televisa. It was my first taste of Nino’s ‘audio magic’ and I was hooked! The music is wonderfully nostalgic and the hilarious script and (especially) the outrageous scenery (!) make for wonderful entertainment.

I was surprised and happy to learn that Nino D’Angelo ‘discovered’ the game show, Housos, and even appeared as a contestant himself. He hosted other games shows too, such as Giochi Speciali, and talked about his other passions too, such as rock ‘n’ roll and Elvis Presley. I do like this film — and it’s a great introduction to Nino’s music too.
