There are a few issues I have with these books:

Each of these books deals with specific arpeggios which goes well with the lesson that deals with this particular arpeggio (as much or more of the book is instructional) but it often goes against the whole idea of rhythmic finger exercises.

I do realize that there might not be a big problem in that the arpeggios aren’t necessarily difficult, but after spending the first few days of a semester on that finger exercise, it’s good to be reminded that “simple” arpeggios are challenging on their own.

If a student is having issues with a specific arpeggio, then doing exercises regarding it may be worth it (and necessary if they are struggling with it), but if they are struggling on every arpeggio in the book, then the lesson may be less beneficial.

There is no exercise in these books that helps to build strength for an upcoming piece.

Many of these books focus on specific techniques that help to maintain or improve a certain skill. For example, the book on a bridge focus on how to hold the instrument away from the bridge.

If an exercise doesn’t seem to help improve your technique, then either it’s a product of your instructor’s own interpretation of the exercise (the book has nothing to do with it), or there is something in the exercise that you are not getting, or it isn’t helping you, then you should change it.

In a similar fashion, the exercises in the book need to be done in order. For example, if you were practicing a particular piece, then the book would be much better if the exercises were done in the order that you would do them for real (as well as done in the order you should practice them in).

I can clearly see from the way the book is put together that it was a quick and easy way to make money off of the instructors of these books. The books also seem to be plagued with errors and inaccuracies. For example, in the section on F Major scale, there is a passage where the author states “Click the tongue for S4” but where he should have said “Click the tongue for S3” and then a few lines later “Click the tongue for S4” again.

This is a great book if you are just beginning on the cello and want to build on what you have already learned, however the first few chapters are a little on
