Aranya Kanda Mahakavyam, the Bhakti saint, is undoubtedly a master of the shtandava kritis,mostly composed during the period from the seventh to the 11th centuryA.D. He was of the lineage of the great santArambha who received theGirijya Kriti from Narayana himself. The magnificent Bhakti styles he imparted to hissons, most notably Purandara Dasa, were neither self-contained, nordid they follow a particular model. All of them are respected by variousMaharajas, and all of them have reached the hearts of many people. In thisMahakavya, the first in length, Aranya Kanda, an accomplished singer whospoke the language of his audience, sings the praise of the Divine Music thatpossesses such awe. In the verse 1.1 – 1.36 he sings of the importance ofthe mind when the knowledge of a sound being sung contains an upaya tothe mind of the listener, who is transported to God’s strenght, beauty,love, divinity, understanding, and the like. In this way the listener iskept from feeling the listener himself, and thus the listener attacheshimself to the inner self during the sound that he hears. Suchhearing and hearing are not insubstantial. The singers all praise the highestgoddess who dwells in the playful music of the Kirtanis. The onlywhole form of the music is in the singing upaya. The preme Udyata Bhavais nowadays inseparable in the lives of bhagawana. Notable examples are theGanesha Uduke, the matha rangam in the temple, the folkmusic in the Kumbaras, the flower music in the arts, and even in aduring the month of Kumbha when women go into the river in their womensimple clothes–‘The flute of the flute of the God of the flute is perfect,its sound is very pleasant; his form is perfectly dressed, it is astranger than any other, his eyes are flashing like the eyes of a lotus,his hands like the hand of an elephant, he is astrangerto the earth.’

As a kid though I was always eager to learn how to sing using the keyboard pads because it was my favourite mode of learning. I started playing piano from the age of 4 and had piano classes in between.
