Things To Know About This Utility

RefreshExcel works best with fairly small Excel files and with files that have some data already saved inside of them.
All tables inside of any data source will be listed inside of the main part of the program.

It is recommended to connect to a data source inside of RefreshExcel and then list all of the tables there.

What is this?
This is a script that writes a command to a background job in Windows that checks for updates to all the installed instances of RefreshExcel.
There is also a simple configuration option (preferably using a.ini file) that allows you to specify how often to check, the direction of the refresh (database or Excel file), and if the service should run on startup or not.

Technical Background
I wrote this script based on a video I saw on YouTube and on some other resources available on the Internet. The script only uses simple string operations, the Execute method of the BackgroundJobManager class and an API that I found in a separate project of mine ( ).
Usage
You start the script by executing the background.bat file, which installs the service in your system. The script will only be functional if you install the service in a system that has the latest version of both the Windows Service and the BackgroundJobManager.exe (required to run the script).
After the install, you have to start the background.bat file. The script will check for new versions and, if they exist, it will restart any background job that has outdated data (in this case the server).
Remember to close the file when you are done with the script.
You also have to remember to update the service to its latest version. (Note: You may need to restart your system after running the background.bat file, as the service may not be started yet.)

Can I use this script to install this tool on a windows 2008 R2 server?

Short answer: No.
A Windows Server 2008 R2 server does not support background jobs.
You can read more about what’s known as “Service Broker” here.
If you still want this tool on a server, you can make some adjustments to make the script work.
