Fluffy was a rescue. She had once or twice had emergency surgery, but that was it. She had survived lots of kennel-type stuff before coming to live with me. A road accident killed her oldest friend. No one’s fault; she just got up off the ground and walked straight into the middle of the road. Fluffy was just the best dog.

I went through a phase where I was having lots of grief—unusual for someone with a good group of friend in their 50s. It seems to have slipped into going to church on a regular, often weekly, basis. I had a lot to communicate to God and I needed to hear about it. The readings from James helped; they always do.
