since there are no official english language patches for resident evil 2 or code: veronica x (space channel 5: part 2), it’s safe to assume that capcom is still unaware of the existence of non-japanese speakers. however, as luck would have it, some intrepid hackers have released unofficial patches for the ps2 and pc. you can download them at romhacking.net.

this game’s unique gameplay makes it one of the very best zombie games for the dreamcast, and is definitely worth playing. there are a few issues with this game, however. firstly, while the audio does work, the music is actually a fake by the european arm of the band i.n.f.o.s. (infinite noise factory orchestra) and not the actual japanese version, which can be heard in the japanese and english versions of the game. additionally, you will need to have the dreamcast version of the game in order to access the extra patches. finally, the game is a little slow, especially when it comes to the boat sections. overall, however, this game has a lot to offer and it really is worth your time to play.

all in-game text is now understandable to non-japanese speakers, anime cutscenes now have english subtitles, and pesky spoken dialogue during submarine missions where the translators couldn’t insert subtitles have been overdubbed with english text-to-speech voices. the blue submarine no. 6 -tides of time- website was also restored and translated into english as part of this project, allowing players to download the game’s original dlc to grant bonus items in the shop. to download the patch, check out the project’s page on sega-sky.

i am going to provide step-by-step instructions to install the english language patch on the pc version of resident evil 5. the patch is an optional download and is not required to play the game normally, but i want to provide instructions for those who would like to make the game playable in english.
now, onto a kickstarter-funded translation project for a game i’ve never even heard of before, so forgive me for sounding like i’m pushing a shovel of dirt on your shoulder, but the translation patch for the sega dreamcast version ofresident evil 5 has finally arrived, allowing us to enjoy the game with english voice acting, english text and all. a new trailer for the translation can be viewed at the project’s kickstarter page.
i’d be remiss to not point out that this is the first time that the game has been available in english, and that this new translation patch is the first major update to the game since it’s original release in 1999. i really hope that english-speaking fans of the game can find some time to give this a try.
i’ve been inspired to write this post by a fantastic video i recently watched on the english-speaking release ofresident evil 2, which is some of the best fan translation work i’ve seen to date. it’s so good that i’d like to see more dreamcast ports given the same treatment.
if you’re a fan of the game, i’d recommend downloading this patch at some point. it’s quite a bizarre experience if you haven’t played the game in a while, but it’s one i’d highly recommend for any fans of the series. the game has been completely redone in the english language and there are tons of fun surprises to be had.
