Roblox is an online game platform and game creation system developed by Roblox Corporation that allows users to program games and play games created by other users. Roblox provides games and players with a platform to create their own experiences. Using a drag-and-drop user interface, players control their own games or experience in the games created by other people. A game is created as one or more projects, which are saved and play in a sandbox. Roblox is authored in the programming language Lua.
Roblox was born out of the notion that children should be encouraged to create. Therefore, Roblox eschews a strictly linear narrative such as in most games, and features a large, active community of young users. In October 2009, BusinessWeek named Roblox the fastest-growing privately held company in the US. At that time, Roblox had close to 30 employees, and was generating revenues of US$10 million a year.
Roblox was launched on May 30, 2006. On September 15, 2009, it reported that it had 500,000 registered users, and began accepting members from outside the United States. In 2010, the company raised $10 million in Series A funding.
In December 2009, the company began allowing anyone to submit games and projects to the site. As of April 2010, games and experiences were programmed in the Lua language and can be accessed by anyone. In this initial version, users were restricted to approximately 400 characters.
The platform allows users to publish games and play them in a sandbox environment. This sandbox environment allows users to play without any limits on how much time a user can spend playing. Users can also build game platforms, which allow other users to create their own games. The functions that can be developed for a game platform are limitless, and only a user’s imagination and creativity limits the possible functions that a user may build into their platform.
A game is saved as a project, which includes a front-end and back-end. The back-end contains all the information necessary for a user to play the game, while the front-end is the interface that a user sees and interacts with when playing the game. Every user has their own sandbox and project, and their own projects are saved when the game is closed. Each user can choose to share their projects with the community; however, users must pay a small fee to share their projects with the community.
