Roblox is an online game platform and game creation system developed by Roblox Corporation that allows users to program games and play games created by other users. Created by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004 and released in 2006, the platform hosts user-created games of multiple genres coded in the programming language Lua. For most of Roblox’s history, it was relatively small, both as a platform and a company. In 2009, Roblox’s user base grew to about 400,000 users. In May 2010, Roblox was acquired by the New York-based real-time strategy game developer and publisher Daybreak Game Company for an undisclosed sum and changed its focus from gaming website to game development platform.
At the 2011 Global Gamer Conference, which took place in Los Angeles, David Baszucki announced that Roblox was growing to be the largest game platform on the web. Roblox held its first annual user conference, dubbed Roblox Day, in 2013 in San Francisco.
As of January 2020, Roblox had more than 160 million monthly active users. Of these, more than half are between the ages of 13 and 17, although this figure includes children as young as two and older users who spend their free time in other platforms that may not include Roblox.
Roblox held a live streaming event on Feb 21, 2020. The event was held in partnership with the YouTube channel of Investigation Discovery.
