rome iis predecessor, the totally free and awesome total war: rome 2: total war mod is now available as a standalone game. the mod has been updated and has new content such as the ability to buy and use the bestiary. see the download link in the download tab.

the biggest changes that need to be accounted for by any modder attempting to create a total war rome mod or total war total war: rome ii: total war mod is the canon of the total war games. just because it was made by the same people who made the original game, they are not guaranteed that it will function the same way. if you mod the game, you mod it from within the context of the canon of the total war games. the same is true for the total war: rome ii games.

the romans are set apart by their love of war, which is reflected in the campaigns structure. the campaign begins with an over-the-top battle between carthage and rome. after that the focus shifts to rome itself, and the narrative is driven by individual battles fought between the romans and their enemies.

the game still feels like it belongs with the total war series, and this is the most important thing. rome ii has lost none of its deep tactical gameplay, but now it feels more like a total war game and less like a standalone game from the folks who make total war. the game is still deeply flawed and has a few key issues, but the ai can still be frustratingly bland for some, and it still feels like its the best tiberian game in the series.

in rome ii, theres a nagging thing about the size of the map that i cant quite put my finger on, but something about the scale doesnt quite fit with what i know from the total war games. i remember in rome i, that in the singleplayer the map could grow to gargantuan proportions, but in the multiplayer maps could be pretty limited. in that regard, it felt like, with the ever expanding empire, the map was growing to accommodate the ever expanding empire, and yet here in rome ii, the map seems to be growing to accommodate the ever shrinking empire. this leads to a feeling that the map isnt quite as big as it should be.

Having played both vanilla and and the Divide et Impera campaign mod for a few weeks, I think that Divide et Impera, the radious campaign mod, would be my first recommendation. I really enjoy the hands on experience of creating and crafting a campaign, and Divides overhaul has improved a lot more than the RPG items given out in vanilla, as well as greatly improved the overall design and aesthetic of the mod. Its a better alternative to vanilla, and it gives you the unique experience of crafting your own campaign.
In addition, the Dominate Religious Beliefs unit modifier has been removed. This means that the world youll fight with will be a lot more culturally varied than it is in the default game, as it wont always be your realm of influence. This also means that the borders of your campaign are much more flexible. One of the most anticipated features of Rome II were the border expansions, and with the removal of this unit modifier, along with the opposite, they have been toned down.
As far as balance goes, the “Rome Reborn” mod is some of the more popular and elaborate mods for Rome II. It restructures the unit balance, so that cavalry and chariots have more power than they normally would and artillery have less. Instead of controlling the size and number of units, each game the AI will be able to control resource production.
A key gameplay takeaway from playing the vanilla version of Rome II and its sequel is the oddness of using a lumbering Roman contingent to fight a war in the Persian Empire. In both, the Roman legions are large, slow and clunky. They are also quite well defended, and can play a part in siege warfare like youve never seen before.
