it is very handy to set soft limits to say the y axis for 10mm to 70mm, and the x axis for 10mm to 70mm. then you can set the software limits to say the x and y axis can travel no more than 70mm, and the z axis travel no more than 10mm. if you do the above, the machine will be happy to travel the commanded travel distance in any axis, and the machine will run slowly, but not crash and burn, if you travel beyond the soft limits in any axis. remember that the soft limits will only work if you never change the x and y limits, and you would only change the 0 position, if you move the origin of the workpiece a bit.

as a final word, the most important thing to remember, is that your servo’s (and limit switches) must always be in their correct position. never change the position of a limit switch, if you are running software limits or any other limits at all. then the g-code will not be sent, and the servo will not move. this is quite common.

the paper that comes with the unit is a bit confusing and is not easily understood. however it does explain in considerable detail the different values for the various parameters. the first thing to know about sainsmart is that the unit is based on the use of arduino or an equivalent. we were going to try to use the arduino to program the unit and the customer has no clue on how to do that so we had to go with the downloadable software. this programming language is really not all that hard to figure out once you understand the basics. it is a very easy to read language and it is a very easy language to write. the programming features are very simple to use and each of the programmer windows have a menu bar with some basic commands. at this point in time there is no documentation on the software. once the settings are made in the software and the programmer is fired up it is a bit of a mystery how to tell it how to write the settings to the nvm. the programming directions that come with the software are very simple and straight forward. however once the settings have been entered into the software they need to be taken and copied into the top of the programmer window. there is no instruction about where these settings need to go. therefore we had to research the web and find the settings needed. there are no instructions on how to write the settings to the programmer. sainsmart has a web page where they show how to write the settings to the nvm: . i have not been able to try to do this as yet as i have been too busy. sainsmart also has another website which is a bit less confusing: . this web page also shows how to write the settings to the programmer. there is no information on where to put these settings.

1. fresh firmware. this option is for advanced users and requires you to edit the config.h file and compile your own version of firmware (using the accompanying xcode project) and place the generated hex file in the directory: c:\program files\sainsmart\g-code\firmware
2. update firmware. this option is for users who need to update the firmware but dont want to compile it themselves. it will be a download from our site, and you need to place the downloaded hex file in the directory mentioned above. then run the sainsmart software. it will automatically compile your firmware and place the generated hex file in the directory mentioned above. this option has no effect on the config.h file.
3. use this option for older machines, or if you only want to update the firmware to the latest version for testing. you will download the firmware update file from our site, and place it in the directory mentioned above. then run the sainsmart software. it will automatically compile your firmware and place the generated hex file in the directory mentioned above. this option has no effect on the config.h file.
i started with option number one. i followed the instructions in the genmitsu support section of the sainsmart genmitsu webpage to make a fresh copy of the firmware. i then modified the config.h file in the directory: c:\program files\sainsmart\g-code\firmware. it was only a few lines of code to get the spindle limit to be set to the 0.0 for the x and y axis. i also had to set the z axis limit to the same distance as the x and y limits, and set the z axis count to 3. i also changed the spindle to go in 3 passes. the firmware was already updated, so i did not need to do anything. i then started the sainsmart software, and it compiled and put the new firmware in the directory mentioned above. i then ran the software again, and it used the new firmware for the first pass, and i checked the results. it worked! i had to spend about 10 minutes to adjust the software limits and test a couple of things. the x and y axis were right where i wanted them. the z axis was at the upper right corner of the table, with the tip barely touching.
