L’euba niveaus: The course provides an in-depth, 60-credit-unit overview of telecommunications technologies from a comprehensive perspective. The module corresponds to the university requirement for the BA (Neues Timur) degree in communications. It will also provide an important starting point for students majoring in engineering or science who wish to specialize in this field. The storyline of the course is set in the 19th century, at the terminus of the age of sail, as the Age of Steam picks up. The module includes a coverage of the new technologies and techniques that revolutionized 19th-century communication. As the first course in its kind at Nanyang Technological University, the course will draw upon the experience of the Centre for Communications and Information Technology (CCIT) of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, and its work on “media convergence” — the interaction among new media forms ranging from the digitalized computer network to the web, and the continued extension of the “information revolution” to new media. This course will cover a broad overview of media coverage of the Age of Steam, with an emphasis on the technologies used from the steam engine to the telegraph and the radio. Special issues addressed include the spread of railways and the early evolution of the telegraph, the development of film and cinema, and the invention of the transatlantic cable and the first telegraph messages (the dot-and-bar “Marconigram”, signed by Lord Kelvin). But more than an introduction to the Age of Steam, this course will focus on the detail of the technologies of the 19th century, with chapters that include the history and development of the telegraph, the invention and growth of cinema, telephony, radio, and broadcasting (including the earliest experiments with the wireless telegraph and radio), and magic lantern showings, as well as the technologies used in print and typography. Historical sources will make the greatest use of the rich archive of historical materials available at Nanyang Technological University and from NTU’s media collection at the National Libraries of Singapore. Students also have the opportunity to use the media library at the school of the Economics department of NTU as a source of primary and secondary materials. Key legal and policy issues in the media industry will be addressed. Some specific coverage of broadcast media, such as the VTR and television, is also included.
