descriptive research is concerned with the description of learning patterns and language use in communicative situations with the aim of making clear what is known about the learning process and what remains to be established (ibid).
cautions should be taken when conducting research in a foreign language. since different traditions of teaching use different methods to learn a foreign language, doing research in such a language can pose many challenges. the view point of seliger and shohamy that is being offered is that much work needs to be done in not just describing but also explaining the views of traditional and non-traditional teaching methods.
qualitative research methodologies involve the study of the language used in everyday situations. this is often a naturalistic process of producing material through casual, unplanned or even unstructured observation of what people do when they are speaking with one another. since almost everything that people do and say is embedded in a social context, research into second language acquisition requires a strong background in the social sciences. social anthropologists and ethnographers investigate the cultures and societies in which languages are used, including the ways of knowing, thinking, constructing and symbolising that are particular to the cultures studied (seliger and shohamy, 1989:126).
although a lot of importance is given to the methods of research in the theory of second language acquisition, the validity of the research findings is still a common problem (ibid). according to seliger and shohamy (1989:127), theoretical debates about the validity of research findings continue with some linguists believing that the data collected to demonstrate the validity of theory are unreliable since observation and experimentation can never be perfect. there is no simple answer to whether findings are valid.
