serum’s controlled by its 100 realtime-oscillators or waveshapers. each wave is “fed” one of 4 filter models which are either higher quality (saw, hpf, lpf) or cheaper (bandpass, hpf, lpf). each filter gets a distortion stage added on top to create the edgy, fuzzy filter effects that have been used for decades by artists and sound engineers alike. waveshapers also get control over the output, whose quality is determined by the incoming wave’s volume.
serum’s audio path is a complete mystery that translates the incoming audio directly into analog audio, where it gets processed by 4 delays and a 24db/octave-ish filter. when the incoming audio volume is below 0db (nothing), the audio is set to a noiseless output level. serum is also capable of creating the classic “tube scream” effect seen in many old synths. in order to do this, serum writes to the buffer at a specific rate which gradually ramps up and down the volume. this effect is usually used for very high-pitched sounds and can sound nothing short of silly in other cases. however, this can create a very interesting effect.
