The XMPP standard is an open, Internet-based protocol for real-time text-based communication. Installation
You can download and install SoapBox Communicator for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Just type “sudo apt-get install soapbox” in the terminal of your choice and follow the wizard. If you prefer to use a tar.gz file, you can get it here. It is recommended to create a desktop shortcut on the Windows desktop that will make the installation process quicker.
Running SoapBox Communicator
A menu will pop up on the right side of the screen with the options “Open folder”, “Open session” and “Create new session” in the main window. Select the option you want and click “Start session”. Once a user has a session open, they can log on from any Jabber-compatible client, including MSN, Google Talk, Trillian and many other clients that support XMPP as well as any IM client, such as Pidgin or Skype, that supports Jabber. You can also start a new session from the menu, or directly from an existing session.
Once you have your session open, you will see a contact list in the bottom-right hand corner. The list shows which users are currently connected, but if you press the “Online” icon, you will see the entire list of the users currently online.
If you click the “User list” icon, you will see the list of online users. The list is divided into “Online” and “Offline” contacts. “Online” contacts are those who are logged into the session, while “Offline” contacts have logged out. It is possible to change the status of a contact from “Offline” to “Online” or vice-versa.
