spirited away is an outstanding film that deserves much praise. the characters are good, the animation is excellent, and the storyline is something you’ll feel you’ve seen before. you might think that it’s cliche, but i think the film is a bit more sophisticated than that. the show isn’t easy to define because it’s like a mix between ponyo and howl’s moving castle. miyazaki does a great job with this film and he hasn’t disappointed us with any of his movies. spirited away is definitely a great film that you should take a chance on.

i didn’t feel much like going to work today, i was looking forward to watching this, but it was a very slow day and i was tired. so i just stayed home, drank a few mugs of coffee, and watched spirited away over and over again. i was able to concentrate on the film without distraction, and i really enjoyed it. it’s an amazing story. i love the entire movie, i loved it. the story is about a young girl who is kidnapped by the witch yubaba, and what happens to her after that. it’s a very touching and lovely story. wikipedia has a brief description of the story, so you can read that, if you want. the movie is a bit difficult to follow at times, because the settings and characters don’t change often enough, but the story is so engaging that i was able to overlook that. there were times when i would be watching the film, and i’d find myself almost literally carried away with the story, falling into the bizarre world of the bathhouse and the witch yubaba’s realm. and it’s a very weird, strange place. what is a bathhouse but a room full of lava-like water and hundreds of small bathtubs. i imagine it’s a little like a human body, if you were to get all the water out of your body and put it into a bath, your entire body would be a bath. if your body was a bath, your organs would be the water. and the bathtubs are like the tissues of your body. but of course, that’s just a very simplified idea of how the body works. and the witches (that’s how they’re called, witches) are basically humans like us, except for the fact that they don’t age. they can live for a very long time, and when they’re old they can travel on their own steam (you can tell they’re old because their heads are all sunken in, and the tops of their heads are round instead of flat), they look like little balls of flesh, with only a single eye. they also wear long, flowing robes, often in bright colors.

and the really cool thing is, there aren’t many other competitors in this regard. it doesn’t have to be all about speed, or the bigger the better. i’d like to see a show that’s similar to spirited away that took its time telling its story and didn’t have any filler. just quality. and i’d like to see a show that’s not like spirited away. give us something completely different.
the problem with anime and manga is that there’s a certain formula that has been adopted by virtually all the publishers. the most obvious is that the number of chapters in a volume is fixed for the entire series. there are a couple of manga publishers that have started to move towards monthly releases, but even then, they stick with chapters for the entire series. this means that a series that takes two or three years to be completed is split up into three or four chapters, then one chapter is released per month. that’s a lot of waiting. publishers will also want to capitalize on the media attention that comes with the release of a new volume. then you get another volume or two released when the media attention has died down. it’s like the television industry, where they only release an episode or two per week during the season, but then all episodes are released once the season has finished. it’s all just one big tease to keep the otaku interest. and of course, there are all the movies that are released with one or two episodes in them. i’m still waiting on that to be a series. it’s all just so..boring!
spirited away is the story of a young girl named chihiro who is swept away from her home by an enormous storm. she lands in a strange land, and soon finds herself in the middle of a witch’s hut, where she meets a boy named sosuke and a mischievous spirit named “ponyo”. the witch named haku takes chihiro home with her and gives her the name “ponyo” in honor of the mischievous spirit. chihiro stays there for most of the movie and her life changes because of this. she learns about friendship, magic, and the truth of being human. the film has an endearing charm and is a great watch for the kids and their parents.
