CSAR-1, also known as CSS-1, is the first attempt by the United States Government to build a hardened ballistic missile submarine. The hull design and armament was derived from that of the Soviet Akula-class SSBNs. After 5 years of development, CSAR-1’s first test was on 19 July 1971, which was followed by 4 tests between 7 November 1971 and 9 November 1975. History
The ballistic missile submarine CSS-1 was built by the Electric Boat Division of the General Dynamics Corporation, Groton, Connecticut for $35 million. This was the first all-steel submarine built in the United States. The submarine had a length of and a maximum submerged dive depth of.
CSAR-1 was designed with an angled bow, to enable it to launch a payload at an angle of away from the target, thereby minimizing the interception efforts of any hostile missiles. The bow has a blunt tail to reduce the submarine’s radar signature.
CSAR-1 was also equipped with the Mark 46 torpedo, which has a destruct capability, which would destroy the submarine if fired. The submarine was also equipped with the Mark 48 torpedo, which has no self-destruct capability.
The design of CSAR-1 was based on the Trident (SS-X) missile system, and was originally meant to be a successor to the Polaris. However, after the Cuban Missile Crisis, it was decided to have a new fleet of ballistic missile submarines based on the Trident system. CSAR-1 was the first submarine to be built for Trident, and was also one of the first to be built. CSAR-1 was also the only submarine to enter the US Navy inventory and be operated until the 1980s.
CSAR-1 was commanded by Commander Delmar M. Stayton. The construction of CSAR-1 was cancelled in 1973, and it was disassembled at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1974.

Guinea pigs were immunized with 200 USP units of purified calf calcitonin, and the immune response to the immunogen was examined by monitoring four parameters, including antibodies to the calcitonin, biologic effect of monoclonal antibody against the calcitonin, removal of the calcitonin from blood circulation, and in vivo protection against calcitonin by the pretreatment. B cells, monocytes, and NK cells were all involved in the immune response. The different types of immune cells were all activated, particularly at the early phase of the reaction. Moreover, the immunoreaction induced an immune response to the calcitonin. This immune reaction was followed by the induction of pancytopenia and a white syndrome. Pancytopenia was caused by changes in macrophages, whereas the white syndrome was caused by changes in granulocytes and T lymphocytes in addition to erythropoiesis inhibition. This immune response was associated with changes in peripheral calcitonin levels. Peripheral levels were low during the cell-mediated immune response period but high at the time of the pancytopenia.
