Reproduction is a process that occurs in all sexually reproducing organisms from single-celled eukaryotes to mammalians, involves ramification, or multiplication and differentiation of a single fertilized cell into a complete organism, and is typically classified by the way it is typically accomplished. In unicellular eukaryotes, reproduction can occur asexually by cloning division, or by binary fission. In multicellular eukaryotes it can occur by sexual reproduction, where gametes (sex cells) combine by meiosis to produce haploid genes, or by asexual reproduction, where clones are formed by mitosis and somatic cell differentiation. In plants and bacteria, reproduction occurs through binary fission.

Asexual reproduction is a reproduction method that only offspring are produced, while resulting offspring are identical to their parents. Asexual reproduction is an important and well-known phenomenon in both plants and animals, including bacteria. In humans, asexual reproduction occurs during the female menstrual cycle, during which only female eggs are produced. In other mammals, periodic regenerative tissue in skin and gut is observed to contain special stem cells that undergo rapid division and tissue formation, and result in the growth of multiple identical babies. X-inactivation is an example of asexual mitotic replication in mammals that results in a diploid cell having two copies of a single X chromosome.

All organisms on Earth are descended from a common ancestor or ancestral gene pool.[189][277] Current species are a stage in the process of evolution, with their diversity the product of a long series of speciation and extinction events.[278] The common descent of organisms was first deduced from four simple facts about organisms: First, they have geographic distributions that cannot be explained by local adaptation. Second, the diversity of life is not a set of completely unique organisms, but organisms that share morphological similarities. Third, vestigial traits with no clear purpose resemble functional ancestral traits. Fourth, organisms can be classified using these similarities into a hierarchy of nested groups, similar to a family tree.[279]
