i found myself getting too comfortable with some of the basic ship maneuvers that, by the time i’d gone through some missions with score, i already knew how they worked. as a result, this became a problem, because i kept flying in a style that worked perfectly fine in a smaller mission, but not when the size and stakes increased.

thankfully, this is a very minor issue, and i’d actually say it’s a “feature” of this game. while you are not able to purchase any additional strike-certified suits, it would appear that there may be a more robust battlefield space exploration portion of the game to come down the road. what i really mean by that is that, while the game is definitely challenging, it’s also not impossible. regardless, the problem feels inconsequential. not only did strike suit zero: directors cut make me a better pilot, it also made the game more challenging. which is, in of itself, an interesting proposition.

controls: my primary control scheme was dual analog, with the playstation 4’s default “d” setup and the x analog controller button as my forward and backwards (left and right, respectively). what i mean by dual analog is that i mapped “x” and “y” to the x and y buttons. for me, this fits my preferred thumb-to-trigger scheme very well. as far as ai goes, i also used v.a.t.s. (the normal tactical mode is off for me), though i did not use it sparingly. the game can be a bit forgiving in this arena, so v. is not really needed. and yet, it’s always nice to have the option to turn it on, especially in an intense dogfight and with a full assault wave of enemy craft before you.

The campaign missions are quite varied, so I won’t delve into their details, but my main gripe is the fact that the narrative is weak. As I said, before it became clear that its gameplay mechanics wouldn’t overhaul at any point, Strike Suit Zero was oozing with promise and humanity. The pathos in the story was a delight, and had me wanting to see more. As such, it should have been a refreshing change of pace to see events primarily take place on the battlefield, even if the dramatic events unfolding here serve a mere trivial purpose as far as the game’s narrative is concerned.
AsStrike Suit Zero’s co-developer, Born Ready has the distinction of pulling off a fantastic game with more modest means. The UE4 engine proves to be a strong foundation, and Strike Suit Zero looks great, with some of the best looking mobile graphics on consoles. It’s also an extremely varied game, as various weapon types, enemy types, and level designs all contribute to the experience. Almost anything a player could want from a first-person shooter is covered, and the sheer variety of things to try makes for a fast and fun experience.
Another original and impressive feature of Strike Suit Zero is the artificial intelligence. The enemy pilots are also fairly well realised and are arguably some of the most memorable and fearsome foes in gaming, making for satisfying battles.
It’s also worth noting that if you’re a strict completionist, this is the game for you. As you’ll see while enjoying the post-launch content, the game really does reward you with over 250 hours of gameplay (at least with the Gold Edition), and while it’s not impossible to finish the game in less time, you can tell that every bit of it was carefully planned out before going into production. Strike Suit Zero is also ridiculously well-balanced, and will only get harder and harder as you progress. In fact, it’s almost a little brutal.
