Synch is a simple command line tool that synchronizes files on multiple machines.
I think Synch is the most elegant application on the site. With very few lines of code, it is able to:
￭ Receive a list of filenames and determine which was updated most recently
￭ Replicate this file to any destination(s), whether another folder or another machine on the network
￭ If the destination path doesn’t have the file, it will be created
￭ If the destination is unavailable, ie: off the network, the destination is ignored and the next is tried.

This new log reports what the last action was, in case you made a mistake.
To show how Synch works, I’ve used a list of files, and Synched them with a few folders.
Using Directory Diff
The directory diff is what Synch uses to determine which files were updated most recently.
When a folder changes, all the files in that folder will change. It is generally the same situation, except with a large number of files.
Please note: If you want to use this new feature of Synch, you have to select a custom log of what you’re doing.
To test this new feature, I’ve made a directory of 1,000 files in it.
Each folder contains 1,000 files.
Each file has a number in the filename.
Example:
111,000
111,001
111,002
…

In Synch, you can select a log when you start the program.
Simply choose a log when you start Synch and press F1.

Synch takes a list of filenames and determines which files have changed. Any file for which the new version is available is replaced. If the new file version is unavailable, the destination is used. Destination paths are checked before attempting to replicate a file.

Options:
-f, –force
Force Synch to ignore any security on the destination, even if the destination is a network share, if the destination is not locked.
-l, –lock
If Synch encounters an error while locking a file, it will retry the operation after the appropriate timeout. The time used in retrying is configurable and defaults to 5 seconds.
-t, –timeout=
The length of time to wait before checking for the lock on a destination and retrying. Defaults to 20 seconds.
-h, –help
Prints this help to stdout.
-v, –verbose
Prints more information in debug mode, which includes the filename and status of the file(s) being attempted to be synchronized.

Notes:
If any of the filenames or paths are not absolute, the destination should be specified with a relative path, if possible.
Synch uses the remote cache (RSYNC) to determine what files are out of sync. However, if the destination doesn’t have cache information, the files will be cloned to the destination instead.

Installation:
Synch is distributed as a portable Python script (.py ) and Ruby gem (.rb ).
To install Synch, simply copy the files to a directory on your system.
