Erin D. Lewis, a history professor at St. Edwards University, is researching prom in Texas and has found some interesting proof that the state has hosted proms featuring the cast of the 1960s TV show “Gilligan’s Island.”

She said that her research into the origins of prom, which were first held at Texas A&M University, led her to the one high school in the state that had a prom promoting the show, Channelview High School. She said the school was known for having a senior class that was particularly popular during the show’s run, though it had fallen into disfunt by 1965.

“I found Channelview High School to be like the poster child for that show,” said Lewis.

The Channelview High School prom featured a dinner theater performance of the show with live music, a cake baked in the shape of a giant coconut and on-campus decorations of palm trees, a white parasol and a palm tree. It also offered a brand of beer called “Guv’nant Beer,” a play on the band of the same name.

“It was high school folklore in the town. It was a one-off, it was a very high school specific event,” said Lewis.

Lewis, who said she is also researching prom in New Mexico, has contacted Channelview High School but said she did not hear back from them.

The Channelview prom was videotaped by the school and Lewis said that it has been donated to the local movie theater, now called the Wheatley Film Center.

The event was parodied in a skit on “Saturday Night Live,” with comedian Bill Hader dressed up as the Guv’nant Beer character and singing a parody of “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.” It aired on “SNL” in March 1972, three months after the Channelview event.

Lewis said that she had not found any evidence that proms have been held in Texas that have focused on a television show but that hasn’t stopped her
