This created an interesting situation: the game was back, and it was just about five people on the chat channel, most of them in the beta guild I had just left. I couldnt log back in and had to play as a newbie, which I did for a couple of hours.

There are quite a few mechanical issues to get used to during the first third of the game. A few of these are mere annoyances. Doors lock after combat. The reticle is invisible until you press a button. Pressing “e” or “tab” to pull out a crossbow will result in freezing the screen so that you can’t progress during a sequence. Characters use a separate set of buttons to draw and strike. There’s no reason for this. Even typing “rtaclbnt” into your chat client will cause it to lock up for a good two seconds. Still, these and other minor annoyances soon go away as the series descends into heavily scripted melee combat battles. The games main attraction is the ability to bathe the world in fire for as long as the meter holds out, which makes it possible to quickly wipe out hordes of enemies. Unfortunately, the meter needs constant refilling with fire blasts. It’s not fun to have to reload into melee just when the enemy numbers are beginning to thin out. There’s also a global cooldown between shots. This means that it’s safer to stay back and blast away at the crowd until the meter fills again. There’s no real need for this to be the case. Having separate fire and melee buttons would have made the controlling of curse users infinitely more playable and fun.
