oh, i love it. i love that. i love the book. i love the book because it taught me a lot about myself. and i think about that a lot in the book. i think that the book is teaching me a lot about myself. because i know i was not a very good listener. and i think this is a book for everybody. i think every person has a few things that they need to talk about. they just, i think, need that guidance. and that guidance was very helpful.

when we think about the fine art of small talk, were talking about the process of starting a conversation or having a conversation. when we think about that, are you thinking about the conversation or the person? so, debra, what are you thinking about when youre thinking about the fine art of small talk?

okay. so i think, the first book that i ever wrote was the fine art of small talk and it came out in 1999. it came out in the year i graduated from college. and i was like what the heck am i going to do with this idea of the fine art of small talk? and then i thought, well, i know what i want to do. i want to be a speech pathologist. so i just decided to teach a class for speech pathologists in chicago. and i started teaching that. and that was the beginning of the fine art of small talk. and it was a pretty big success. then i moved back home to chicago and i worked with teens and adults with autism spectrum disorders. i worked with a lot of kids with autism spectrum disorders. and that was my life, and the fine art of small talk was my life. and i loved it. but then i thought, i know what i want to do. i want to write a book. and so that was my first book. and i wrote that book in about a year and i thought, this is the book that i am going to give to people who are struggling to have conversations. so, i was a teacher of how to have conversations, which i thought was a very important thing. and then i thought, well, now i want to do the fine art of conversation, the fine art of small talk.

like, im going to just say, hi, everybody. you know, i cant remember everybody. my brain doesnt work like that. and that makes me a good leader. so i was talking about, you know, we have to learn how to do that because im sure youve learned over the years, but im curious, are there any other questions, you know, that you think can be taught or that you would love to know, you know, that youve learned from experience that youre, you know, just kind of a natural at.
yeah. i think one of the things that, you know, i get nervous when i go to a business event, is i actually think that i am very good at telling people about what i do. and it is very easy for me to tell people what i do. but i think, and im not sure if this is true about you, but i think that you know, my most difficult thing is the networking part, which is, you know, youre sitting down at the table and then i have to get up and go around the table and then i have to put my name tag on. and that is a lot of work. and i think that i do tend to, you know, i can make small talk. i can talk about my kids, you know, my kids are in college, and then i talk about this one thing. or i talk about this one thing. and then im out of there. you know, sometimes i just want to, you know, sit down and drink. right. and i think that i tend to be very much of a listener. and i think that, you know, i dont know if thats a good thing or a bad thing. i dont know. i really enjoy it. im sure that you know, youre having some of the same experiences. but i think that, you know, i think im a listener. and i think that its a great skill to be able to listen because that allows you to build trust. and i think that people can do that. so i think that it can be learned. but, you know, im just not sure, you know, what would you say to me or what i would say to you is, you know, would you agree that that is a skill that can be learned or is that something that youre born with? because im just really curious.
