mary is a woman in her mid-sixties, her face is mostly covered by a black veil, and her eyes are covered with dark glasses. she wears a white dress with a black jacket, a white apron, and white trousers. her hands are secured to a metal frame, and her legs are strapped to a chair. the nurse is in the same costume, but her face is uncovered. she is in her early thirties.

in the series of events that led to marys confinement, the playwright breaks the news of an affair that is going on between her and her husband, william, as she is preparing for her confinement. her husband, also in a psychiatric ward, is not in the play.

the play begins as marys husband, william, discovers that his wife is going to be confined in a mental hospital. he goes to his office and calls his secretary, mary. he tells her to go to marys apartment and get the keys to the car. she is to drive him to his home in the country. after a long conversation on the phone, william realizes that marys mental illness is completely out of control, and he cannot help her. he returns home and tries to kill himself, but is not successful. he puts a gun to his head and slowly pulls the trigger, but nothing happens. he gets dressed and goes to marys house. he enters her bedroom and asks her to come home with him. mary refuses and tries to run away. she runs down the stairs and tries to jump out of the window, but fails to do so. she runs to her husband and collapses on the floor. william takes her to the hospital. he is met there by a psychiatrist and marys nurse.

she threw her belongings into the street and then went to the police, who did not believe her story that her boyfriend had raped her. debaldo gave a vivid portrayal of the episode, which is recounted in transcripts he found on the internet. the girard family was not the only one that was against her. the head of the hospital where mary girard had been committed would not let her leave. the result was that she had to spend many months locked up. debaldo could not have created a better portrait of her–and no one else.
