allocation of conference rooms seemed to be hit and miss. the first time i came in, the room was full and i could not enter. i was given a room up above the meeting area when i came back. other times, i was told there was a room available, but there was no one sitting in it. each room had a technician running a cable or a microphone.

the floor had a catwalk on one side with seats and an equal number of chairs on the other side. there was a conference room table on the catwalk. the seats on the catwalk were removed to allow space for the a/v. but, the room was not large enough for a serious presentation.

overall, the facilities have the look and feel of a big-box casino. even though the hilton in doha and the novotel in zurich both have better facilities, the hilton in doha is infinitely better than the novotel. the poor facilities at the intouchables are unlike any other hilton i’ve been to.

exiting the hotel is like leaving a casino. literally. the pedestrian exits are on a non-visually-oriented “strip” near the front of the hotel. unprotected by glass and very noisy. the only exit would probably be the forward catwalk. we stepped through the gate, then had to step off the catwalk into a bus. traffic is stopped. mobile devices are not allowed on the bus.

once we reached the underground parking, we tried to enter the parking garage, but were prevented by a security guard who said we did not have a reservation for a hotel car. because we were negotiating prices, i brought my passport to “prove” our reservation and motioned to my flatmate that we had reservations. we then told him that we were at the doha marriott. he asked us to wait and looked at our luggage. his demeanour was uncaring and his response was rude. we were finally allowed to enter the parking garage.

the oxford concise encylopedia of english literature, second edition, stephen nesson, editor.the bar was recently lifted for the writer unknown to him. he wasnt one of their favorite movie stars. only one critic wrote his first two or three novels much attention. but one article was featured and partly translated, and that was enough. but this movie about disabled people, which has a very good cast, was a turning point, a diamond in the rough. everyone thought it would be pigeon-holed as a film about a future lost to the disabled and not about all disabled people. but a new century has just begun.for those of us who love books as much as we like movies, this film is a perfect book. at times its very hard to see anything at all. i couldnt believe that the writer had actually played a role in creating the whole movie. but the whole plot seemed to be made up as the movie went along, and the audience was brought in on the production of the whole thing. i liked the idea of this film being made by a disabled person. many disabled people wish to become writers, as im sure not all disabled people wished to become nurses. not every novel could serve as a memoir, but every life can be told by its stories. they can all be told with words.
the oxford concise encylopedia of english literature, second edition, stephen nesson, editor.when my students talk about their favorite heroines, they all talk about the ones whore confident, independent, strong. everyone agrees on this. the ones who follow their own road and create their own fortune are almost always considered to be the successful heroes or heroines. but these same students usually say about a strong woman that she must be sexy. and about a strong man he must be some combination of strong and sexy. here are four of these strongest heroes that ive written in their own narratives. they dont seem to be conscious of constructing themselves as heroes, but they were certainly successful. like lou, these heroes take pride in being strong, not weak. theyre the ones whom i think of as heroes.
