at this point, i’d be willing to watch this movie just to see iko uwais act on something other than running a building, and to watch some action other than “gritty” hong kong thuggery, but this film isnt that.

the raid: redemption helped to revive the action genre after the violent arms race of the last few years. evans quite cleverly turned the young action star rama into a lead character, who doesn’t always say what you want him to say. the fact that you’re an admirer of the films of stunt choreographer yuen woo-ping is already be a bit ominous as you get hit in the face with images and sounds that upend all your expectations about what action should be.

over the course of the film, you’ll witness (and want to see) the indonesian prison shot up, explode, fall apart, burn, and ultimately implode. but the best thing about the raid 2 is how cool it is. it’s inspired by woo-ping’s wild work and evans fills up the frame with a sort of blindingly fast editing. for the most part, this is an action movie that starts in the middle but stays on the front edge of the screen until the very, very end of every sequence. but with no shaky cam, the excitement and violence really comes to the forefront and the idea that no one actually sees what’s going on is teased out to become somewhat of a metaphor for all of what’s wrong with society these days.

if you are really looking forward to the us remake of the raid, you should not watch this blu-ray. the raid 2 is a completely different proposition and even if you don’t like evan’s film, it’s a great experience to watch. also, this marks the end of the trilogy. if you’ve already seen the raid and its ilk, you’ll probably enjoy the raid 2 more and more as you go, if you see it with fresh eyes. but if you’re after a straight up action film, you can’t go wrong with the raid 2. on the flip side, if you want a shot of classic action, you could just go for the home release of the first film and let yourself be warmed by the blissful velocities and dizzying dynamics.

evans’ made of steel-like technique completely exhausted me in ‘the raid 2.’ for one, as i’ve previously mentioned, the action is backed by spot-on sound mixing from the great trevor wilkinson who also worked on the first ‘raid’ and is one of the main reasons that so much of the audio in the movie is so good. there are some bangs and whangs here and there, but the sound design is otherwise superb. a few sequences where the great choreography is executed flawlessly with the action interspersed with the romantic score of marco beltrami are a true treat for the ears. on top of the good sound design, evans also adds some great sound effects to create a truly immersive experience. i’ve read that the day of shooting for ‘the raid 2’ was a long and exhausting one for him and his crew, so that explains this long and very deliberate look into the score. at least the soundtrack has a great deal of variety, as the thai-indonesian jazz songs from the first film are supplemented by a hauntingly beautiful and sorrowful string and chorus solo that plays on every scene in which rama is thinking about his family.
most of the action takes place in a vaguely-defined warehouse area that’s outfitted with a lot of fake balconies. this is where the remnants of the house (which was also featured in the first movie) are located. incredibly this time around, our heroes don’t get lost in a maze of colorless corridors and desperately search for a door to gain entry to a room. instead, they head straight to the front of the premises and start their search. this makes it instantly obvious which sectors are the safest and most important areas for the bad guys. in the raid 2, a whole sector is taken over by a crew of robbers who live and work in a specific area. for their purposes, these robbers aren’t just cold-blooded killers, but proud members of a brutalized society that is treated like the wild animal it is. they worship only money and live off its flow. anybody who stands in their way is immediately sacrificed. but of course, this time around they are only the henchmen of a much bigger and more dangerous criminal organization with a network that stretches across the globe.
