As you progress through the game, you will face a variety of new challenges. Not all of the units on the battlefield will be automatically available to you. At first, you must recruit new units as they appear. You’ll also be asked to take action to improve your position. Want a big army? Then you need to build a lot of cities. Want to take control of the seas? Then you need to be prepared to attack your enemies from the sea.

When you assume the role of shogun, you become the master of a growing dynasty. You can build and organize an army, settle the provinces of Japan, employ your vassals and expand your domains. You can interact with your vassals via the clan management system. All is well and content if you control all of Japan; but beware of being crushed from the east or the west by an overlord.

Unless youre positive that all of your characters are equally skilled, it’s best to start with a balanced army that can carry out most of the different skills you plan to use. The bulk of the skills youll have to spend the money to acquire are Chivalry, Leadership, Shipbuilding, Gunnery, Art and Languages. There are also others, like Legal Studies, which can be gained through random events, or through research. Weapons and defense are key skills. Finding out which soldiers have these skills is a good way to start. To make the most of your characters in battle, you need to assign them to special roles. During battle, the other characters can either help their allies in melee combat, or protect them from attacks.

Leshou Building served as the garrison of the Mito forces and is now used as a restaurant. It has several floors and is a perfect viewing platform for the garden in front of the building. The higher level of the garden is used as a vantage point for the Nanjing garrison, and the lower levels are used for local ceremonies.

The battlefield is now called the Hideyoshi map. It is based on the very same map from the first Shogun game, but with different features and new units. You start with 50 villages under your control, spread across the battlefield. Each village is a building you can use to improve your armies performance in a limited manner, granting you access to new units and buildings. A few special buildings allow you to use your armies to build new villages and even cities. Thus, the first few turns of the game are spent slowly colonizing the Hideyoshi map, building villages, and creating a powerful war machine. After this, the village upgrade and mass infantry building becomes effective, and the pace of the game rises dramatically.
In addition to the Hideyoshi map, there is a new coastal map, which is to be used for the beginning of the game. Here, you will have fewer villages and more coastal islands and cities for you to build in. To defend your coast, your initial clans will be able to build coastal castles, or a boat or two. More castles may follow as you progress. Coastal castles are vulnerable, and the first coastal castles you build are quite easy to take. But castles on the main map are protected by walls, which make siegecraft more difficult. All villages and cities on the coastal map are easy targets for sieges, which begin later, once you have conquered the Hideyoshi map. As a beginner, there are some important castle locations that you need to avoid. Take care, also, if you do not deploy a castle at the very first opportunity: a good defensive castle can cause you trouble as a besieger.
