Unfortunately, TTFEdit prompted several error dialogs in our tests while we were tinkering with its settings. Otherwise, it used low CPU and RAM, so it didn't hamper system performance. Too bad that it hasn't been updated for a long time. Nevertheless, you can try it on older operating systems.

Although an old application, TTFEdit is an open-source, easy-to-use TrueType font editor, which is totally free to use. As such, it may be of interest to graphic designers. We understand that it hasn’t been updated for a long time, but it’s easy to find a licensed Java version of the application.

I had the same conundrum as you but for editing/creating OpenType (OTF) Typefaces, I installed these fonts on my computer and opened them in OpenOffice so that I could convert them to TrueType fonts. That was exactly what I was looking for. I would have never thought of doing it that way. Great app.

Cons

Once you have a font installed, it will always think it’s installed so it will freeze up if you don’t uninstall it or open it. Then you have to reenter your information (font name, family, etc) each time you want to open it.
