(EP 1 583 648 B1) describe a process for the production of 3,4-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexan-1-one (Irganox) by condensation of cyclohexanone with bromo-4-hydroxycinnamic acid. The condensation can be carried out either in the presence of a strong base or, preferably, in the presence of an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt.
Further, the applicants disclose that Irganox can also be produced by reacting 4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyl with cyclohexanone.
Wortmann et al. however do not teach how Irganox can be produced with high selectivity, whereby high selectivity can mean that less than 50 wt.-% of other unwanted products are formed.
The applicants discovered that products containing high selectivities, can be obtained when the condensation is carried out in the presence of a rhodium catalyst.
In the art it has been found that the selectivity to obtain homocoupling products can be increased by increasing the reaction temperature (cf. EP-B-810 386).
Since the reaction is a base-catalysed process it follows that the total yield of the desired 3,4-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexan-1-one can be decreased with increasing temperature if the total yield of cyclohexanone which is used for the condensation is kept constant.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a novel process for the production of 3,4-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexan-1-one (Irganox) with high selectivity, whereby the total yield of the desired 3,4-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexan-1-one with respect to the total yield of cyclohexanone is as high as possible and the rate of the reaction is as high as possible, at a temperature as low as possible.’s will, will do battle with the other.
