Set in the world of Rune, 18 centuries after the end of the Rune Wars, a family of treasure hunters have vanished with the last of their loot. The Viking Simulator is an indie game in development by Bruno Franchi.

The story follows Karl the Viking, a man trying to survive in Viking civilization following a Viking shipwreck that killed everyone onboard.

While trying to find out why the ship was sunk, Karl finds himself in situations where he must deal with items and other characters who are characters in their own games.

In the process of trying to get off the island, Karl meets some heroes who he must use to progress through the game in order to get off the island in alive.

Gameplay

The gameplay is broken down in two parts. The first part is item based, where the player can use items in order to engage in combat with enemies and other characters.

Character fighting is simple, the player is able to preform attacks, block, dodge, and execute special moves which are based on the character they are playing. While walking or performing these actions the player can be thrown off balance which should force them to use a special move, either to cancel the action or to add more complexity to the combat.

The second part of the gameplay is a turn based system that can be used in multiple ways. The player can use the turn based system to avoid fights, move around the map, or to move the character towards enemy, allies, or locations.

The combat was something that Bruno Franchi spent a lot of time getting right, especially with a fighting system that allows for flinching and dodging to work correctly.

Originally the player would have three possible moves at the start of combat, attack, block, and dodge. Players were taught how to use each by having a trainer character who would be knocked out or severely injured by the player and after that a tutorial would run in which they would learn the techniques they were shown. The player was then given a choice to carry on, or to retry and learn it again. After a player retries a move it is removed and they are left with the dodge move if they were able to learn the attack first.

The attack was originally a basic swing but Bruno went back to the drawing board after every single suggestion he got was that it was too simple. After a little while he discovered the attack was actually a kick, but that was too simple again.

The kick attacks are now a two handed chop that looks like a battering ram. The player will land a kick on the ground and after doing so it will slow down and then come at the

1. Run the game in the Data directory.

2. Drop the entire Data directory in the root directory of your Steam install.

3. Restart Steam

4. Steam will detect that a game is installed, launch and play.

5. Steam will not find Valhalla in your library or in your purchased games, but it does find Medieval Simulations.

6. Click the small little Viking icon in the top right of your Steam window.
