I just reinstalled Vista on my Compaq with the SP1 update installed. I set the product key to something else. My next problem, the HP drive partition is marked as “NTFS” as it normally is and I am not able to change it. What I do is the following:
Under Computer Management, I go to Disk Management, right click on the drive and click on the option “Change Drive Letter and Path” and click OK. The screen goes black for a minute or so and the drive disappears. I click on the same drive and in the properties, it says it’s formatted as “NTFS.”
Is there anything I can do to get the drive to change its partition type to “NTFS” so I can make changes. I tried the instructions on this page, but my drive is still “NTFS” after I change it:

This happened to me about a year ago. I bought an HP DVD drive to install Vista. My Vista disc for the HP DVD drive was corrupted, so I booted into Vista Recovery CD and just restored the Windows files.
If that doesn’t work, then boot into Vista Setup with the Vista disc, and then restore Windows files.
In my case, I didn’t have any critical software on my Vista installation.
