my computer won’t shut down. it’s a dell studio xps with vista ultimate x64 (i added more memory), the computer has 5gb of ram and a sata hd and is 64bit. my computer will close applications normally when i’m trying to shut it down with vista’s start button. i have to hold the power button to shut it down. if i let go of the power button before it’s all shut off it will still shut off. i found out that i have an unsolved error 4999 and 4997 and they probably have something to do with my computer. i’ve tried all kinds of solutions from fixing them to reinstalling.

spliff: yup, that’s what i have too. i usually run avg, but their software isn’t doing too well on my machine, and doesn’t scan as fast. it also costs money, i don’t think i can afford that at this point.
spliff: the flicker is weird, but it seems to be random. i mean, it’s happening in all kinds of random apps, but not all the time. i never noticed it before, it’s now kind of annoying. i’ve had that thing happen to me before, but i fixed it by rebooting my computer. weird how it happens when you’re not really doing anything. luckily, i have a habit of opening apps every once in a while, so that’s something.
merlin_uk: i tried disabling everything but utorrent, and i tried disabling windows indexing. i still get these errors. it’s almost as if the utorrent executable was stopped, and then started again with a new memory address (or something like that). any other ideas?
spliff: it’s not the same as my problem. mine also has the problem even though i’m connected to the net. it happens sometimes (often, really) regardless of what i’m doing. it’s not connected to anything, it’s just a weird error.
spliff: it’s not a problem with the torrents i’m downloading or even with utorrent. i can restart my download, connect through a different port, etc., and nothing will stop the process. it’s not even just about utorrent. any program will do it: firefox, explorer, wireshark, etc.
spliff: yeah, it is kind of annoying. i just wanted to see if you could give me some information on how to fix it. i’m not really knowledgeable on this topic. but i’m trying to learn a lot, and i want to learn how to fix my own computer. i don’t really know why i’m getting this problem. but if you could tell me the solution, i would be really grateful.
