Although we believe that the volume modes described above are the best option for volume management, they may not be the most efficient. For example, the volume of a suboscillator shifted by 8 semitones (which would be 2x the main oscillator) would never be higher than the playing level of the main oscillator, no matter what you do, or indeed, no matter what the playing level is to begin with. The volume modes that are more efficient are those that have a “clipping” effect if the modulatorvalue exceeds 0 or the multiplication factor exceeds 1. To practice using the Serum oscillator, we created two practice patches with two different multitimbral oscillators. One has three main oscillators and three sub oscilators (the orange patch) and the other has two main oscilators and two sub oscilators (the blue patch). All of these high-end synth features do indeed come at a cost. Serums sheer power and versatility are perhaps its biggest strengths, but the synth does take a bit longer to load than some other VSTi synthesizers, and its CPU load is higher. It can be quite hard to take at face value, which makes it a true challenge to try and sum up its many aspects and purpose, but we will try anyway: Serum feels like a direct descendant of 1980s analog sounding synthesizers, while looking utterly modern, but aversions to the (digital) past dont prevent it from offering something very specific and unusual. If youre looking for a synth with quite an old school vibe, powerful and flexible analog synth sounds, a lot of knobs and everything you need to build patches on your own, look no further – Serum is the one.
